Implementation of the DMAIC methodology to reduce production costs in a water bottling plant, Trujillo 2025

Abstract

This research analyzes the application of the DMAIC methodology to reduce production costs in a bottled water company located in Trujillo, Peru. The main objective was to implement a continuous improvement system capable of identifying and minimizing waste in water usage, operational times, and the replacement of non-reusable 20-liter containers. A quantitative approach was used, with a pre-experimental and explanatory design, and a sample composed of 48 days split between before and after the intervention. Data were collected using interviews, observation guides, Ishikawa and Pareto diagrams, and processed through statistical analysis. The results showed a 4.8% reduction in the production costs of 20-liter bottles, equivalent to approximately PEN 1,184.60 in monthly savings. This outcome is significant for small-scale operations, especially considering the potential savings with increased production volumes. The conclusions highlight that DMAIC methodology helped optimize water usage, standardize procedures, and improve worker performance, ultimately enhancing production efficiency.
