Abstract

Renewable energy has had considerable progress in the last decades getting to have a significant share in the global energy
market, complementing fossil fuels and possibilities of becoming the primary source of energy in the medium term. Such sources are
very low polluting, sustainable and distributed, and their exploitation also involves social and economic benefits by helping to improve
the quality of life and the local economy with employment generation. While still not competitive with fossil fuels, generation costs
experience a steady decline due to technological advancements and economies of scale, being a competitive condition as a prerequisite to
achieve the popularization of renewable technologies. The carbon market and Certified Emission Reductions constitute a remarkable case
of the contribution of the renewable energies (RE) to the mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through participation in clean
development mechanism (CDM) projects, in which Colombia is beginning to engage with determination. We conclude renewable energy
have very positive effects in all areas of the economy and are an important element in achieving sustainable development of countries and
regions
