Construction and validation of educational technology in the form of a booklet to guide the elderly in post-burn care

- The booklet “Protecting Your Skin” has been validated by experts and seniors as an effective educational technology for the home care of elderly people after burns.
- The guide integrates physical, emotional, and environmental care, promoting the autonomy of the elderly and reducing the risk of reducing reactions due to preventable burns.
- The proposed educational technology fills a gap in post-discharge care for elderly burn victims and is applicable in health services and gerontological rehabilitation programs.
- This booklet contributes to the continuity of post-discharge care, the prevention of new injuries, and the strengthening of the educational role of healthcare professionals.
Introduction: The aging population necessitates increased healthcare focus, as the incidence of hospitalizations and complications, especially those related to burns, rises. Consequently, it is urgent to educate the elderly on self-care to prevent severe complications. Objective: To develop and validate an educational booklet to guide elderly individuals in post-burn care at home. Materials and Methods: This was a methodological study conducted in four stages: literature review, booklet development, expert validation and target audience evaluation. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Content Validity Index. Results: A total of 23 experts with experience in elderly health, education and technology and 23 elderly participants followed by a burn treatment center participated. The final booklet, titled “Protecting Your Skin: Guidelines for Post-Burn Care”, includes 51 pages and covers topics such as burn classification, initial care, accident prevention and useful contacts. The content validity index was 1.0 among experts and 0.92 among older adults, indicating excellent acceptance and understanding of the content. Discussion: The booklet addresses post-discharge of health education needs of older adults with burns, standing out for the target audience’s comprehension of educational technology, accessible language and evidence-based content. Conclusion: The educational technology in the form of a booklet demonstrated adequate validation and a high level of understanding among older adults, showing potential for incorporation into nursing practice as an educational resource, promoting self-care and the safety of older adults in post-hospital discharge care.
