1.Article Types

Original Research and Innovation Articles: These articles should be unpublished manuscripts reporting on original research in the fields of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, and computer science. Manuscripts should present new and significant findings with the potential to advance scientific knowledge in their respective fields. (Submission Form Original) (Original Article Structure)

Short Communications: Short communications are unpublished reports on partial or final research results in the aforementioned fields. These findings should be of significant importance and warrant rapid dissemination. (Submission Form Short) (Short Communication Structure)

Systematic Reviews: Systematic reviews are comprehensive analyses of research related to a specific question. They employ organized, transparent, and replicable procedures at each stage of the review process. Systematic reviews are critical evaluations that aim to analyze the essential information from primary research studies on a specific topic or problem in the specified areas. They aim to account for current knowledge, identify trends, and highlight advancements in the field. (Submission Form Reviews) (Review Article Structure)

To approach the systematic review it is suggested to rely on the protocols: PRISMA(Link) or JBI(Link ). Although these are focused on medicine, many of their principles and guidelines are applicable and reproducible in any area of knowledge.

Systematic reviews can be commissioned by the Editorial Board from subject-matter experts, or submitted by professionals interested in a specific topic. In the latter case, authors must have relevant publications or certified experience in the chosen topic.

2.General considerations before submitting an article.

  • By submitting a manuscript to INNOVACIENCIA, authors implicitly or explicitly confirm (through their signature) that:
  • They have thoroughly reviewed and followed the author instructions.
  • All listed authors meet the internationally accepted criteria for authorship.1
  • No eligible author has been excluded from the list.
  • All authors are aware of and agree to the final submitted manuscript version.
  • No behavior violating scientific integrity or publication ethics has occurred.

3. Formats and Documents Required for Manuscript Submission

To submit an original research and innovation article, a short communication, or a systematic review electronically, the corresponding author must first register using the following link: registration. If the author is already registered, they may proceed with the corresponding submission.

Due to the double-blind peer-review process, two versions of the manuscript must be submitted: an anonymous version and a complete version containing all required author information, in a word-processing file format compatible with Microsoft Word.

The following documents must also be completed in full and submitted without exception:

The submission must include the manuscript (including the anonymous version), Form 1. Originality, Authorship, and Conflict of Interest, Form 2. Ethical Principles, and the Cover Letter

4. Metadata Registration on the Platform

In addition to uploading the required files, authors must carefully complete all manuscript metadata in the OJS platform. All authors and coauthors must be entered individually and in the same order in which they appear in the manuscript, with their names, institutional affiliations, email addresses, and ORCID iDs correctly provided. The corresponding author must also be properly identified. Please verify that the title, abstract, keywords, language, and authorship information match the manuscript, as this information will be used for the display, identification, indexing, and citation of the published article. Authors are responsible for the accurate entry and verification of this information; therefore, any error or omission may affect how the article and its authors appear on the journal website and in academic information systems.

5. Supplementary Material and Research Data

Authors who have supplementary material associated with the manuscript, such as datasets, extensive tables, figures, code, protocols, multimedia files, or other resources, must present it in an organized, complete, and properly documented manner. 

During peer review, any material required for evaluation must be uploaded to OJS as a separate and fully anonymized file. When raw data are necessary to verify the analyses or results, they must also be made available to reviewers in an appropriately anonymized and organized form. If ethical, legal, or confidentiality restrictions prevent data sharing, these restrictions must be declared and justified. Tables, figures, and other supplementary items must be numbered consecutively using the letter S: Table S1, Table S2; Figure S1, Figure S2; File S1, etc. Each item must be cited in the manuscript using the same identifier. If several tables are included in a single Excel file, each worksheet must retain this numbering.

When the supplementary material includes multiple files, datasets, or code, a README file must be included with a brief description of the content, organization, and requirements for proper interpretation. For extensive datasets or datasets containing numerous variables, a data dictionary or codebook must also be provided, describing the variables, codes, units, and categories used. Once the manuscript has been accepted, authors must deposit the final version of the supplementary material in an open science repository, preferably Zenodo or Mendeley Data, and include the repository information in the Materials and Methods section of the final version of the manuscript as follows:

The numbering, naming, and content of the deposited supplementary material must correspond exactly to those cited in the final version of the manuscript. INNOVACIENCIA will not edit, typeset, or directly publish supplementary files. Authors are responsible for the preparation, organization, documentation, deposit, and availability of these materials.

6. Figure Specifications

Authors must submit only EPS files (line art) or TIF files (halftones/photographs). For scanned images, the scanning resolution (at final image size) must be as follows to ensure adequate reproduction: > 800 dots per inch (dpi) for line drawings; > 300 dpi for halftones; > 600 dpi for figures containing both line art and halftone images. If the figures are not the authors’ own work, without exception, a signed authorization from the publisher or the person holding the copyright must be submitted.

 7. References

References must correspond to complete, relevant, and verifiable sources that support the concepts, methods, techniques, and data cited in the manuscript. Whenever possible, original research sources should be cited, with priority given to scientific articles published in recognized, peer-reviewed academic journals.

INNOVACIENCIA uses the Vancouver style, following the current recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the formats established by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Citing Medicine and NLM Sample References.

As an INNOVACIENCIA editorial modification, authors’ names must appear in bold in all references.

In-text citations. References must be numbered consecutively according to their first appearance in the text and cited using Arabic numerals in superscript and in parentheses. When an author’s last name is mentioned in the text, the numerical reference must still be included.

Examples:

  • A significant association between both variables has been demonstrated (1).
  • García et al.(2) found similar results in an adult population.
  • According to Martínez and López (3), this method improves the accuracy of the analysis.

The reference list must appear at the end of the manuscript in the same order in which the references were first cited. References first cited in tables or figures must be incorporated into the numerical sequence according to the point at which the table or figure is first mentioned in the text.

General Considerations

  • Include up to six authors; when there are more than six, list the first six followed by et al. This is an editorial standard adopted by the journal.
  • Journal titles must be abbreviated according to the abbreviations used by MEDLINE, available in the NLM Catalog.
  • The DOI must be included whenever available, preferably as a persistent link: https://doi.org/....
  • Authors are encouraged to cite the full article rather than its abstract. Conference abstracts or other publications should be used as references only when duly justified and when no appropriate full source is available.
  • Preprints, when cited, must be clearly identified as such.
  • Material generated using Artificial Intelligence must not be used as a primary source of scientific information.
  • Authors must ensure that references support the corresponding statements and verify that retracted articles are not being cited, unless the retraction itself is explicitly the subject of analysis.
  • Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the references and for ensuring correspondence between in-text citations and the reference list.

8. Contribución de los autores

Debe incluirse una declaración de contribución de autoría siguiendo la taxonomía CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy), indicando de forma breve y específica la participación de cada autor. CRediT contempla 14 tipos de contribución: conceptualización, metodología, software, validación, análisis formal, investigación, recursos, curación de datos, redacción del borrador original, redacción–revisión y edición, visualización, supervisión, administración del proyecto y adquisición de financiación.

Ejemplo:

9. Editorial Note: Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in requests for revisions before the manuscript is sent for peer review or, when inconsistencies are substantial, in rejection of the manuscript during the initial editorial assessment.

10. Manuscript Selection and Evaluation

Manuscripts will initially be reviewed by the Editorial Committee to verify compliance with the author guidelines and the journal’s similarity policies, which establish a percentage below 20%. If the manuscript meets these requirements, the author who submitted it will receive confirmation of receipt within a maximum of eight days. The anonymized version will then be sent for double-blind peer review.

The entire editorial process will be managed through the OJS platform, ensuring the confidentiality of authors, reviewers, and editors. Reviewers will assess, among other aspects, the manuscript’s pertinence, timeliness, disciplinary relevance, academic rigor, conceptual level, writing, structure, and suitability for the manuscript type. Their recommendation may be: accept, accept with minor revisions, request major revisions, or reject.

Authors will receive the reviewers’ comments and must respond to them point by point, incorporating the corresponding changes into the manuscript. They will have a maximum of one week to do so. If no response is received within the established deadline, the manuscript may be withdrawn from the editorial process.

When the reviewers’ recommendations differ substantially, the Editorial Committee may request an evaluation by a third reviewer. The final decision regarding acceptance or rejection of the manuscript rests with the Editorial Committee. Once the review rounds have been satisfactorily completed and the manuscript has been accepted, it will proceed to the editing and publication process.

The Editorial Committee reserves the right to request modifications and make the editorial adjustments necessary to adapt the manuscript to the journal’s style. Files corresponding to accepted manuscripts will remain stored in the journal’s records in accordance with its editorial procedures.

11. Publication of Accepted Manuscripts

Authors must submit the final version of the manuscript, taking into account the considerations of the Editorial Committee, and submit it electronically together with all files required for editing (main text, tables, figures, supplementary material, etc.).

At this stage, once the manuscript has been accepted for publication, withdrawal will only be considered when there is a valid justification, such as serious errors or ethical conflicts. The corresponding author may not withdraw the article unilaterally. In the absence of justified reasons, the journal reserves the right to continue with the publication process, in accordance with COPE guidelines and other international standards.

During the editing stage, copyediting and the corresponding adjustments will be carried out. The article will then be sent for layout and typesetting. Once this process has been completed, authors will receive the galley proofs, which they must review carefully and return to the Editor through the editorial management system, with their approval or any minimal and pertinent comments, within a maximum of 96 hours.

If the corresponding author does not respond within this period, it will be assumed that they agree with the version presented in the layout. Once the article has been published, the corresponding author will receive an email notification with information about the volume containing the manuscript and the corresponding access link.
