Introduction: The approach to suicide prevention is sometimes disregarded due to the taboo that still exists in society, fear or lack of knowledge of educators and health professionals. Therefore, it is considered a serious public health problem, especially among young people and university students, not only in Brazil. Materials and methods: A qualitative descriptive exploratory research was conducted at a Federal University in the Northeast of Brazil. Fifteen undergraduate nursing students who were part of the intervention project "Being, Knowing, Listening, Living" participated in the study. The analysis of the textual data was performed using the IRaMuTeQ software. Results: The study addressed the personal growth of the project members during the actions, the students' motivation in the search for the value of life, the students' experience in dialogues and conversation circles as a way to prevent suicide, interventions as a prevention strategy and the changes that the project brought about in the lives of the participants. Discussion: The intervention project on suicide prevention and the value of life enabled students to learn more about the topic of suicide and its surrounding factors. It also brought the academic community around the discussions, conversation circles and moments of reflection involving the topic. Conclusions: The project provided students with a new perspective, drawing attention to the importance of developing projects aimed at the university community given the need and discussion on the topic.
