Prevention and control of Covid-19 in Long-Time Institutions for elderly people

Objective: list guidelines and recommendations for the prevention and control of COVID-19 in Long Term Care Institutions for the Elderly. Method: This is a letter to the director that summarizes the main guidelines about the prevention and control of COVID-19 in Long Term Care Institutions for the elderly made a available in documents from Brazilian federal agencies. Results: It is recommended in all institutions to perform the situational diagnosis, suspension of external visits, multidimensional assessmente of residentes and adoption of preventive health practices such as physical exercise and healthy eating with the minimum distance between the elderly. In addition, individual, collective, environmental and material and foof hygiene measures stand out, with surveillance and early detection of signs and symptoms suggestive of the disease, with hospital admission justified in the presence of clinical signs of severity. In addition, the importance of engaging residents and family members in detecting the risks of spreading the disease and in prevention strategies is reinforced, aiming to optimiza the culture of safety and training residents and family members in ensuring safe and quality care. Conclusion: The dissemination of secure information and directives is essential in preventing the dissemination of Covid-19 in Long Term Institutions for maintaining the health and weel-being of the elderly and their caregivers.
