Abstract

Highlights

  • Cleft lip and palate are the most common congenital cranial malformations, with a prevalence of 3.27 per 10,000 inhabitants in Colombia.
  • Comprehensive care for cleft lip and/or palate requires a multidisciplinary team working in a coordinated way from pregnancy to adulthood.
  • Despite almost universal insurance coverage in Colombia, people in rural areas and those with lower socioeconomic status have difficulty accessing comprehensive care for this condition.
  • Fundación Operación Sonrisa has developed strategies to improve access to comprehensive treatment through surgical programs and local capacity building.

Cleft lip and palate are the most common congenital cranial malformations. They occur in about 1.7 of every 1000 live births1. Although it is likely to be under-reported, it is estimated that the prevalence of this condition in Colombia is 3.27 per 10,000 inhabitants2.

Comprehensive care for these malformations requires multiple interventions by a specialized multidisciplinary team from pregnancy through adulthood3-6. Ideally, these services should be organized around the patient's needs and provided by an interdisciplinary team of experts located in the same place who communicate directly with each other to make decisions together6
